Brown was the first Black Director of a national ballet company as she served as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oaklandballet.org\/about\/obc-history\/\">Artistic Director of Oakland Ballet Company<\/a>\u00a0in California (2000 \u2013 2006).\u00a0 Ms. Brown has received numerous awards, including the New York Institute of Dance &amp; Education\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/harriettubmanmusicfestival.com\/Events\/harriet-tubman-freedom-awards-gospel-brunch-2018\/\">Harriet Tubman Freedom Award<\/a>\u00a0in 2010 and\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/bessies.org\/archive\/\">\u00a0the \u201cNew York Dance and Performance Award<\/a>,\u00a0\u201dThe Bessie\u201d; for Sustained Achievement in Performance\u201d as a company member with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paradigmdancenyc.org\/company\"><em>Paradigm<\/em>, Dance Legends in Concert<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0 Karen founded Karenina, Inc and then <em>En Pointe Plus<\/em>\u00a0<em>Dance Mastery Institute<\/em>\u00a0(EPP). She was a transitional Executive Director for Garth Fagan Dance in Rochester, New York and Guest Artistic Director of Ballet Wichita in Wichita, Kansas where she commissioned Black classical ballet director and choreographer Sean McLeod to set a new Nutcracker adaptation on 44 year old Midwest Ballet company, a historic decision.\u00a0 In fall 2020, she was hired as a new Assistant Professor of Ballet at the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory.
