Ballet Legend,
\nDance Theatre of Harlem[\/ultimate_heading][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”5139″ img_size=”300×300″ alignment=”center” css=””][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=””]Karen Brown <\/b>(Ballet Legend) is a native of Augusta, Georgia where she first received her training.\u00a0 She became a legendary Black ballerina who continued with an exemplary dance career. At first her skills enabled her to become a member of the renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem.\u00a0 She spent 22 years as a Principal Ballerina in the international dance company touring the world as a featured artist, master teacher and lecturer when it was under the direction of the company\u2019s founder, the late Arthur Mitchell. She has had a long career of teaching in the dance world and has received numerous awards like the Bessie Award. One of the highlights of her career was when she became Artistic Director of the Oakland Ballet, the first African-American dance professional to direct a classical ballet company in the United States from 2000 \u2013 2006. She\u2019s had several other executive management positions with major dance companies around the country. In fall 2020, she was hired as an Assistant Professor of Ballet and Choreographer at the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory Ms. Brown is also the Creative and Program Director and one of the teachers of the <\/span>Annual Sand Hills Community Center Summer Youth Program <\/span><\/i>that has been presented for seven years by the En Pointe Plus Dance Mastery Institute in collaboration with the City of Augusta, Augusta Richmond County Board of Education, Contemporary Ballet Theatre, Augusta Commission, with the Augusta Recreation & Parks Department.
